Sterilisation of the soil has been used for decades by gardeners to avoid chemical weed-killers and pathogens.
The success is assured. Plants grow better in sterilised soil and are stronger because they do not have to share the nutrients in the soil with weeds. Weed seeds and bacteria are killed by briefly heating the soil up to 90C. This means that all the nutrients in the soil can be used by the plants you want to grow.
Sterilising compost is also to be recommended. Depending on the composting system used, the cooler outer parts may be full of bacteria and weed seed, leading to weed growth. All it takes to kill off the bacteria and fungi is to sterilise a layer of soil 10cm deep for about 10 minutes at 85-90C every two years.
